Facebook Ads for Local Businesses: A Practical Starter Guide
You do not need a huge budget to get customers from Facebook and Instagram. This starter guide covers the offer, targeting, creative and follow-up that local and service businesses need to get right first.
Local and service businesses (dentists, gyms, home services, clinics, salons, contractors) can get steady enquiries from Facebook and Instagram without a large budget. What separates the ones that do from the ones that burn money is rarely the budget. It is four basics, done in the right order.
1. Start with an offer people can say yes to
"Contact us for a quote" is not an offer. A good local offer is specific, low-risk and easy to act on: a free assessment, a first-visit discount, a fixed-price starter package, a free quote within 24 hours. The more clearly it answers "what do I get, and what do I do next?", the better the ads will perform.
2. Target the area, not a guessed personality
For local businesses, geography does most of the targeting work. Set the location to the area you actually serve (a radius around your premises, or specific towns or postcodes), keep the audience broad within it, and let the algorithm find the people most likely to respond. Overly narrow interest targeting tends to raise costs without improving quality.
3. Make simple, real creative
Use real photos and short videos of your team, your work and your premises. They usually beat polished stock imagery for local trust.
Lead with the problem the customer has, in the first line and the first seconds of a video.
Show proof: before-and-after results (with permission), reviews and years in business.
Finish with one clear action: call, book or message.
4. Decide where the enquiry goes
Three common options each fit a different business:
Instant form: quick to set up and fine for low-cost services, but add a qualifying question to filter out casual submissions.
Landing page: better for higher-value services where the visitor needs more information before enquiring.
Click-to-message or call: ideal when customers prefer to speak to someone straight away.
5. Follow up fast
The best ad in the world fails if nobody replies for two days. Respond as quickly as you can, ideally within minutes, and use a friendly confirmation message so the lead knows what happens next. Many local businesses double their results just by fixing this step.
What to measure
Cost per enquiry, and more importantly cost per booked appointment or job
How many enquiries you actually answer, and how quickly
Revenue from customers who came through the ads
Common mistakes to avoid
Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of a page built for one offer.
Changing everything at once, so you never learn what worked.
Judging results after a couple of days instead of a full learning cycle.
Ignoring the phone number and messaging options on mobile.
